12 AF medics depart Belize after training

BELIZE CITY, Belize --  Three International Health Specialists and three non-governmental organization personnel departed Belize after conducting the Global Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Instructor and Provider Courses from July 22-24.

"The most rewarding part of this project was working with dedicated healthcare professionals from throughout Belize. Additionally, the U.S. military members and volunteers of this event put a great deal of effort into making this event successful." Dr. Gerry Prince, LDS Charities.

The goals for the course were to prepare the Belizean providers to train others within their country, as well as improve the overall obstetrics care throughout the country.

The need for the Global ALSO course came about during New Horizons Belize 2013 when a maternal health assessment was conducted across the regional hospital, clinics, and health posts. The observations from the assessment enhanced the course discussions the following week when 30 Belizean healthcare providers from around the country went to Dangriga, Belize to attend the two day Global ALSO Provider Course.

"I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this engagement! Our partnership with the Belize Ministry of Health and commitment of the U.S. military and NGOs allowed the ALSO concepts to be able to make a real difference in infant mortality rates and safe maternity practices," said Col Lyrad Riley, assigned to the 96th Medical Operations Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. "From my former International Health Specialist days, this event is an ideal health engagement that leaves a tangible legacy that is sustainable and perpetuates throughout the years."

Activities, such as Global ALSO, are used to help improve the quality of life for the civilian populace within the AFSOUTH area of responsibility. AFSOUTH, with the support of NGOs, are helping to build the capacities of its partner nation by providing the essential tools and tips in order for the Ministry of Health to implement and sustain a successful Global ALSO training program.
