24th annual Bataan Memorial Death March

A U.S. Army service member posts the flag of the Battling Bastards of Bataan at the opening ceremony of the 24th annual Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., March 17. More than 5,800 people who were from across the world participated in the 26.2-milememorial marathon to honor the 76,000 prisoners of war forced to endure marching nearly 80 miles under brutal conditions during World War II. The event began around 7 a.m., and the course stayed open until 8 p.m., when darkness fell, and it was no longer safe for participants to continue. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Daniel E.
