24th annual Bataan Memorial Death March
World War II veterans and their families stand as they are honored during the opening ceremony of the 24th annual Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., March 17. More than 5,800 people who were from across the world participated in the 26.2-milememorial marathon to honor the 76,000 prisoners of war forced to endure marching nearly 80 miles under brutal conditions during World War II. Many of the survivors return year after year to participate in the event and shake the hands with those who finish the 26-mile loop through the desert.
